and you never need "reference points" and your models will be far "smarter" as they can automatically adapt to a single parameter change, etc. Learn to use the power of parameters/forumulas,etc. Once you learn Inventor properly you will HATE Sketchups way of working. They are totally different programs and function totally different. DO NOT attempt to use Inventor like you used Sketchup. Take the time to learn how Inventor works just as you did with sketchup. Sketchup is so different (read vastly inferior) from Inventor I feel your frustration as I once tried to use Sketchup having used Inventor for so long. If anyone has used the tape measure tool in sketchup, the functionality of that is what I'm looking for or something that accomplishes the same. But I would still love to have some sort of way to mark measurements because I find it to be an extremely essential tool. If there is another way to accomplish this please let me know.

What i need to do is mark a reference point in the opposite corner so that when i play with the distancing option in the rectangular pattern window, the circle lands on the marked reference point which assures me that the spread out holes will all be 3.85mm from the 4 walls. I now want to use the rectangular pattern tool to spread out the holes 5x10. I place my initial hole in one of the corners, 3.85mm from both wall. I want all the holes to be 3.85mm distance from the 4 walls of the box. I wish to place 5x10 holes on the flooring of the box. My specific circumstance is this: I have a shelled out box measuring 148x74. Say, 20mm line.i want to mark the 13.75mm point on that line as a reference point. If you need to convert a driven dimension to driving dimension, you just select the dimension and depress the Driven Dimension button in Format.įor example, I want to mark a specific point across a line. The dimension values are also listed on Parameters table for referencing. Then all dimensions you create will be driven until you depress the button. Before creating a sketch dimension, you can go to Format section in the Sketch panel and click on Driven Dimension button (the icon with a parenthesis).

Since you are a new user, I will show you the basic workflow so it would not confuse you. There are a few ways to create driven dimensions. I guess this is what you are looking for. Dimensions can also be driven, meaning the geometry itself will determine the dimension value. By default, any dimension is a driving dimension which will try to force the geometry to obey the dimension value (length or angle or radius). You can add parametric dimension and constraints to establish relationship between geometry.
